The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha’s ongoing agitation has robbed the arena’s historical past, Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, of its steam. The Railway has shut down DHR services indefinitely, in line with Morcha’s indefinite Government workplace bandh in the Hills since June 12. Along with the offerings, the reservation counters on the Darjeeling station have shut down, causing inconvenience to both the vacationers and nearby citizens. “We cannot take the threat of any harm to the arena’s history rolling stock and harm to the passengers in case protestors forcefully prevent the services. The Railway authorities have decided to discontinue services until normalcy returns,” stated Suman Pradhan, Station Manager, Darjeeling.

Unfortunately, offerings have been discontinued. We have heard a lot about the DHR, and we were looking forward to taking a ride, but as a result of the ongoing unrest, we’ve now not been able to achieve this,” said Jayesh Bapodra from Ahmedabad. Many foreign vacationers who go to Darjeeling to take a journey within the DHR are a dejected lot. “I am a steam loco fanatic, and my journey to India revolves around my visit to Darjeeling to take a trip within the DHR. It is very depressing. It is not every day that we can plan journeys to Darjeeling,” stated a crestfallen Andrew Stone from Australia. As for the locals, reservations and cancellations have become difficult with the reservation counters last closed.

“We ought to depend upon online reservations from home or use a travel agent to get our tickets. It has been inflicting several inconveniences,” rued A Rai, a neighborhood resident. “The passengers who have booked DHR service tickets in advance can get cancellations performed from counters in Siliguri and NJP,” added Pradhan. The DHR was marked as a World Heritage site by UNESCO on December 2, 1999. “Railways fall under emergency offerings. They must resume it right now,” stated Samrat Sanyal, Eastern Himalaya Travel and Tour Operators Association (EHTTOA).

Darjeeling is derived from the Tibetan word ‘Dorje,’ which means a precious stone or the thunderbolt, and ‘ling’ means place. So it is the land of thunderbolts.
